Detroit dazzles with Frozen Four
-By Mike Moore-
Detroit - If a picture can tell a thousand words, Mike Hoffman had quite the story for his friends and family when he got back to Milwaukee.
Part of a dozen or so fans creating their own standing room section, Hoffman leaned forward, armed with his digital camera and determined to capture every angle of this spectacle that he could.
First he aimed forward, then to the side, then...
Craig Transforms Ford Field to Hockey Palace
-By Mike Moore-
DETROIT — Hockey would be played here in a little over a week, but on this March 30 afternoon, Ford Field was a construction zone occupied by sheets of plywood, rubber flooring and a silver panel covering the west end zone that stretched from one sideline to the next.
To the casual onlooker, the eight full days left before the 2010 Frozen Four officially began would hardly...

Shamrocks win D-1 title
-By Mike Moore- PLYMOUTH — There’s a certain passion for Catholic Central hockey some may not understand, but on March 13 was pretty clear for all to see. Whether it was the fans lined up outside Compuware Arena more than an hour before the Division 1 state final began or the standing-room only crowd that eventually packed into the game, it got to coach Todd Johnson.
“When we took the ice, I...

Political correctness of this country should make...
-By Mike Moore-
He was inspired by religion, armed with a gun, and when the dust had finally settled, 13 Americans lay dead. The horror at Ft. Hood a few weeks ago has made national headlines on a nightly basis since, which, if you think about it, has been the biggest problem yet.
Think about the facts for a second. A man, an Arab man, snapped for one reason or another. He had no care for those...

On Sept. 11, 2009, I'm afraid we have forgotten
-By Mike Moore-
The pictures were back on the screen, the emotions back on display. One day, every year, we’re reminded of what happened on that fateful Tuesday morning. One day every year we allow those images to reignite the fear, anger, shock, desperation and helplessness we were flooded with some eight years ago.
Eight years since our country came under attack. Eight years since a mode of...

His vision is what you see
-By Mike Moore-
DETROIT — Mark Iacofano has the best job in the world, just ask any of his friends.
“They tell me that all the time,” Iacofano says with a smile and a quick shake of the head. “They think I work about four hours a day and see every Tigers’ game of the season. It’s pretty funny.”
And accurate — somewhat.
“I certainly work more than they think,” Iacofano says, standing just outside...

A great man, A great loss
-By Mike Moore
We all knew him in our own unique way, yet in a way unique to only him, we all knew him exactly the same.
He was the face of the parish, the character behind what Divine Child stood for. He was the old man with the quick step, the raspy voice, the white hair and that unmistakable wry smile.
If you stepped out of line, he was there to put you back in place. If you needed a shoulder...

Quite simply, a Christian can not support Obama
-By Mike Moore-
It’s a scene all too common.
A woman, having just given birth, looks at the newborn baby in her doctor’s arms and notices something is very, very wrong.
The baby is not crying - as a matter of fact, it’s just breathing. Its movements are awkward and uncoordinated, fairly consistent with something just seconds old.
Something is very, very wrong.
This baby...
A chauffeur to Lord Stanley
-By Mike Moore-
Wherever it goes, he goes. That’s the rule of the land. No debating it. No questioning it. A school function with some adoring young kids or a Malibu party with more celebrities than a prime-time awards show, if the Stanley Cup makes an appearance, so does Mike Bolt. He’s your average guy, as simple and down to earth as his name suggests. His occupation, however, is...
Gheeling's return to the real world
-By Mike Moore-
DEARBORN — More than a week later, as he looks back on how it all played out, he can’t help but smile. He’s been recognized since returning home, since rejoining the outside world, but this was something different. This was something he’ll never forget. With just minutes remaining in Orchard Lake St. Mary’s week-five victory against Birmingham Brother Rice Sept. 27, St....

Another debate, another debacle
-By Mike Moore-
Another debate and another Obama victory. At least that’s what we’re being told by nearly every media outlet across the country today.
It’s getting old, archaic, actually, as to how the predictable cycle of American politics continues to turn in a country where journalism continues to fail us. There is no legitimate way to declare a victor in these meetings, there is however,...
Gheesling talks about Big Brother victory
-By Mike Moore-
He entered the house with drums banging and guns blazing.
He pronounced his religious beliefs, as a Catholic high school teacher, in perfect accord with his political viewpoint, saying he would leave the United States if Hillary Clinton was ever elected president.
When the country was first introduced to Dearborn resident and 2001 Divine Child grad Dan Gheesling, opinions of him...

Firing Millen doesn't solve problems
-By Mike Moore-
Rejoice.
Let the party begin.
Celebrate, Detroit, for today is a great day. Heck, there’s probably some confetti and cupcakes left over from the other ousting celebration just two weeks ago.
First it was Kwame, now it’s Millen. Two different scenarios, two identical results.
The Lions made what many had been hoping for official Wednesday, firing team president and general...
Gheesling dances into the finals
-By Mike Moore-
He came in as one of the most controversial contestants, thanks mainly to his religion and political views, but now, with just two episodes remaining, he is down to the final two, guaranteed at very worst second place, and $50,000.
Believe it or not, it’s been 69 days since Dearborn and Divine Child’s own, Dan Gheesling entered the Big Brother house.
As Thursday’s show wrapped...

A look inside the "Stoney and Wojo Show."
-By Mike Moore-
FAMRINGTON HILLS — For the moment, things are quiet. On the second floor of the Clear Channel building in Farmington Hills, a small studio sits empty. Just three of the 16 overhead lights illuminate, shedding a faint but comforting glow on four computers, five microphones and a cast of empty chairs. Only the faint sound of a commercial hums from the two large speakers...

Gheesling has a chance to alter reality TV
-By Mike Moore-
Those who know him best, know him as a quiet and cocky (he’s proved it’s possible), well-mannered, well-respected, even well-groomed young man with a passion for coaching and a skill for teaching.
Those just getting to know him, may know him as a staunch republican who would have left the country if Hillary Clinton had entered the Oval Office as Commander in Chief.
That’s what...
Hossa signing as refreshing as it is exciting
-By Mike Moore-
It’s been less than a month since the Red Wings claimed hockey’s biggest prize, bringing the Stanley Cup back home for the fourth time in 11 years.
Well, it seems the Wings keep winning, even in the offseason.
It was announced Wednesday that Detroit claimed hockey’s biggest offseason prize, 29-year-old free agent Marian Hossa.
Long thought to be out of the Wings’ radar...

All is right in Hockeytown again
-By Mike Moore-
It was so close, so unbelievably close you could almost taste it. Five seconds on the clock, the puck at center ice, this was it, finally.
Now four seconds, but the puck was entering the zone, but four seconds is all, surely this is it. Three seconds, and the puck is now on their stick, they have a chance. Two seconds, a wicked backhand and, oh, what a save. Now just one second,...

A series is alive as Pens take Game three
-By Mike Moore-
It took three games, but here is our official welcome to the Stanley Cup finals to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Yes, it took three games, it took one hell of an effort, it may have even taken a lucky bounce here or there, but the Penguins are right back in these 2008 finals and the series many had expected (hoped for) has officially arrived. For two games the Red Wings seemingly toyed...
~Dallas remains alive with impressive effort in...
-By Mike Moore-
Finally a battle. Finally some intrigue. Finally, after three games of dominance, playoff hockey arrived in these Western Conference finals.
The Dallas Stars made their official entrance to the series Wednesday night. The arrived with the type of effort many expected in Game 3. For most, if not all, of the first period, the Stars had the Red Wings on their collective heels. They...
~Wings keep rolling~
-By Mike Moore-
It shouldn’t have been this easy. Not at a time in the year when every shift, shot and turn means so much. Not in a playoff schedule where it had been an entire week since the last game played. Not against a team that had already beaten two teams it had no business beating
It shouldn’t have been this easy for the Red Wings in Game 1 against Dallas in the Western Conference...

A rivalry renewed...sort of
-By Mike Moore-
It finally became official at about 12:40 a.m., Wednesday morning. As fans in San Jose went ballistic and fans in Calgary looked at another first round exit by their hockey team, fans in Detroit and Colorado had their collective mouths watering. The second round match ups in the 2008 NHL playoffs are now set, and as you may or may not have heard, old rivals will meet in the...
~Wings need Game 4 victory~
-By Mike Moore-
Ah yes, the playoff panic has already set in, and it took just three games, or, to be more exact, just nine quick seconds in the third game. The Wings and the Predators resume their Western Conference playoff series later tonight in Nashville, and while the Wings hold a 2-1 series lead, and by all accounts are the much superior team, the nervousness in fans that seems to arrive...
~Tigers' start, more than anything else,...
-By Mike Moore-
For months we heard how great they would be, how many wins they would seemingly pile up, how many hundreds, maybe even a thousand runs, they would score.
So here we sit, with the NHL playoffs set to begin, the NBA regular season just weeks from being complete and many Tigers’ fans already looking toward next year.
There are so many different ways to look at the start to the...
~A legend steps aside~

ALBION – It was a cool fall night. A dark sky surrounded the athletic complexes at Albion College. Another Tuesday had come and gone, and as the clock slowly crept closer to 10 p.m., another week of stories slowly crawled to completion.
There was one still missing, however.
The Albion High School girls swim team, with a competition that night away from home, had yet to return...

~Why not finish D-1 hockey final on Sunday?~
-By Mike Moore-
PLYMOUTH - It began with the legs.
Once sturdy and dependable, they were now wobbly, weary, enduring the most extreme test the season had known.
Fatigue of the entire body wasn’t far behind.
Like an indiscriminate plague, it reached out and infected each and every person, transforming a once-raucous energy level to that of a choir practice.
And that was just the crowd.
On...

~The only way the Tigers fail~
-By Mike Moore-
Okay, let’s begin this by reiterating the fact that it’s still Spring Training. While the lot of us are checking the weather report almost as much as we check our brackets (c’mon UConn!) to see how much snow we can plan on digging out of tomorrow, Major League Baseball is still entrenched in the longest, and quite possibly dullest preseason of any of the major sports. Wins and...

‘Always good to come home’
By Mike Moore
DEARBORN – He shuffled from the locker room toward the cold winter air outside. A sub sandwich in one hand and a water bottle in the other, he was dressed in jeans and a simple coat. By every appearance, he was nothing more than your average person.
Soon, however, he was stopped, first by a young boy, armed with a hockey helmet, a silver pen and a simple request.
“Can I get an...
